Hi Bob,
I came across your page while trying to find a mailing address and read the notes (I am a curious person). I just thought I would add my own so you would know that others are thinking and praying for you also. I must say there is quite a difference from your boot camp picture to the one your folks took, filled out a little didn't you? lol
Anyway, my prayers are with you and all the guys over there, you are not forgotten even by those that don't know you.

What do we say? What do we do? Looking at this war from a mother’s viewpoint is not easy. I really don’t know if going to war is right or wrong! I guess God only knows the answers. I am a confused mother, who is starting to write this on her way home from saying goodbye to her son. He is on his way to the big sandbox.
When my son was small playing in the sandbox his daddy built, who knew! Who knew that this was training for his career, and destiny to go to a bigger sandbox. I remember him in his little blue hat. That was when I was a mom worrying about sunburn, sandfleas, and cat poop.
Who knew, this was the beginning of preparing for the big boys toys he uses today.
When we used to go camping at Jellystone Campground, who knew?
This little boy would drag his daddy all over the campground, following the garbage truck with Yogi Bear painted on it. He was totally fascinated with how the truck ate the garbage. What a sight, father and son spending time together. Bob having so much enthusiasm over a truck.
I am a mother who believes that a child’s home is his playground. I knew when Bob and his buddy Zach were playing at home. Who knew that the rubber band gun games would be training for life. I knew when that had been shooting, because I generally had rubber bands hanging from my toothbrush. The boys had fun and seldom did anything get broken.
As Bob and Zach got a little older, they started building a camping area in the back yard. First they cut the swings and teeter totter off the swingset. Then they duct taped the rough spots. The boys secured two tarps over the swingset. They also built a wooden floor to anchor the tarps to. They had a fire ring to cook on. The boys spent a lot of hours camping out and cooking over the open fire. Of course we left the back door unlocked so the little soldiers would have access to the refrigerator and ammo (water for their super soakers). Who new that they were training for the big sandbox.
As the boys got older, their interest turned from the tent to Ford pickups. The super soakers were forgotten and paintball guns were purchased. Bob, Zach and other friends would put on camo. clothes and head to the woods for an afternoon of fun. They would come home dirty, tired and excited from the day.
One day out of the blue Bob tells us that the Navy recruiter is coming the next day to talk with us. Before long he had decided to join the Navy. He had decided to do the delayed entry program. This program was really neat for us as parents. Bob had to call his recruiter every Monday. He had to keep his nose clean. This was no problem for Bob. He has always been a good kid.
Bob’s senior year really flew by fast. He went out for basketball. His reason for playing ball was to work on his conditioning for bootcamp. I know Bob really appreciated all the help that he got from his coaches and teammates.
One week after graduation from River Ridge, Bob left for Navy. Later that summer Zach left for the Marines. Bob went to Great Lakes for bootcamp. From there he went to Fort Leonard Wood for A school. Bob was going to be Seabee. He graduated from A school with high honors (93.27 gpa). Well, ya know he studied equipment operator. From Fort Leonard Wood, Bob went to Gulfport, Mississippi. Bob’s first overseas port was, Vieques, Puerto Rico. From there Bob went back to Gulfport for a few days. Then off to the big sandbox.
Bob’s letters from Iraq state that he gets nose bleeds from the dry air. He has been driving buses and tractor trailers. His letters are humorous and sounds just like his enthusiasm and love for trucks.
Navy life seems to agree with him. He is now six foot three inches tall and 209 pounds. He seems to be happy. We all miss him, but now he is doing what he enjoys doing. We are very proud of you and love you very much.
Love,
Mom
